Why Song painters embraced empty space
A short reflection on the aesthetic revolution that turned emptiness into a subject in itself.

By the eleventh century, Chinese landscape painting had already reached extraordinary technical heights. Fan Kuan, Guo Xi and Li Cheng painted mountains that felt like weather systems. But by the Southern Song, something quieter happened.
Painters like Ma Yuan and Xia Gui pushed almost everything to one corner and left the rest of the paper alone. A fisherman, an inch of shoreline, an entire silent lake of blank silk. The empty space was not what was missing. It was the point.
This was not minimalism as a style. It was a philosophy: that a landscape, like a life, is mostly the space around the events.
LIUBAI is inspired by that decision. Our artworks are built around what is not painted, so the wall itself becomes part of the composition.
