What is 留白?

The Chinese art of leaving space — and why it feels like a home you can breathe in.

What is 留白?

留白 (liú bái) literally means to leave white. In classical Chinese painting, it is the part of the paper that the brush never touches — the mist between mountains, the pause between a mountain and its reflection, the silence around a single branch.

It is not blankness. It is composed emptiness. It gives the painting somewhere to breathe, and it gives the viewer somewhere to stand.

A room built with 留白 in mind does the same thing. It leaves the walls a little quieter than they could be. It leaves a piece of furniture alone. It trusts you to notice what is there because it has stopped shouting.

The Song Dynasty painters did not fill their scrolls. They opened them. LIUBAI is our attempt to bring that opening — that quiet, spacious feeling — into the contemporary home.
