Can a home make us feel calmer?

A room does not lower cortisol. But it can lower our shoulders.

Can a home make us feel calmer?

There is a certain kind of room we all recognise. A wide plaster wall. A single well-made chair. Warm afternoon light on a wooden floor. Nothing asking for attention. And somehow, we breathe more slowly in it.

It is not the objects that calm us. It is the absence of visual noise between them. The eye has fewer decisions to make. The mind, quietly grateful, follows.

A large, quiet artwork can do this for a wall the same way a well-placed silence can do it for a conversation. It stops the room from talking over itself.

This is why we make big, calm, unhurried pieces. Not to decorate a room, but to slow it down.
